Flying Vegetable Restaurant Pattaya
A Street Food-Style Central Pattaya Restaurant

Flying Vegetable Restaurant Pattaya has a setup very similar to many of the street food vendors of the town, with simple gas stoves in the kitchen alongside displays of the ingredients in use, with the food served on plastic plates and metal tables. However, as a well-established and very popular restaurant, diners can be assured of a good level of hygiene and quality, making this a safe and comfortable place to explore real Thai cuisine.

The name on the illuminated sign on Pattaya Central Road, between Pattaya Klang Soi 8 and Big C Extra Supermarket, evokes playful images of greenery whizzing around the room at head height. Rest assured, you won’t see any food fights, but what you will see is an extensive menu of well-prepared Thai dishes in a convenient location in the centre of the city, with a very reasonable bill at the end of it.

Flying Vegetable Restaurant Pattaya is otherwise known as “Puk Boong Loy Fa”, which is the Thai name for the restaurant’s signature dish – stir-fried Morning Glory. Priced at a mere 70 baht, is a tasty addition to your meal and is highly recommended. As this is a Thai eatery, it operate on the assumption that you will dine out with a group and order a selection of dishes to sample and share. Each comes in a modest serving and is promptly delivered. A group of friends is not an obligatory requirement as there are sufficient noodle dishes to enjoy alone and rice with one or two plates also makes a good meal.

Other notable dishes worth trying include chilli fried clams (80 baht), stir-fried duck with vegetables (85 baht) and stir-fried snakehead fish with celery (100 baht), with a satisfying meal possible for under 250 baht per person. The restaurant also has a bar with a good selection local favourites – particular beers and whiskeys. Alongside this is an air-conditioned room, which you can dine in for a small additional charge. However, the main room, being open down one side and with numerous fans blowing, is perfectly comfortable.

Being very popular with the locals for its comfort and street food quality and prices, most of the staff at Flying Vegetable Restaurant Pattaya speak only a little English. However, the menu is well illustrated, with every dish having a picture, a short description in English and even an anglicised version of the Thai name. This means you have the option of either trying your hand at ordering in Thai or, failing that, just point and say “that one”.

The food on offer here is genuine Thai cuisine, not altered to appeal to tourist taste buds. The level of spiciness will be one or two orders of magnitude above what you might come across in a Thai restaurant back home. However, if you want to really experience the country, you have to try the food as the natives like it and there are few safer and more comfortable places to eat like a local than Flying Vegetable Restaurant Pattaya.
